Bea - The Best Kind of Patient

Bea - The Best Kind of Patient book cover with information about it.

Because emergency room care requires fast medical response, our struggling communicators were being treated based on how they looked.  But children can learn words and ASL signs for pain levels just as easily as other new-to- them-ideas.  Bea is such a child, and her parents are thrilled with how she helps the doctor provide the right care.

FAQs

MPAS cards

Aren't FACES and other scales coming from university research more effective?

Pain communication is one of the few areas of training left completely to home environments.   Parents and patients need to lead.  If FACES worked there would be a lot of research published about pain in children under 8 years.  A consistent reliable tool is needed.  MPAS can be that tool.

Are there other tools for parents to teach their child how to manage pain?

No.  We , an SLP and family, took on this creative challenge  because we believe:  their body, their pain, their input.

Can I buy it in a store?

You can order it on Amazon.  We would like our books and MPAS+ cards to be available in hospital gift shops.

Our field trial recruited 15 families: ten who experiencing repeat child hospitalizations; and five families experiencing ordinary health needs.

ALL families reported less stress and faster solutions to pain events after reading My Pain Alert together.  Annotated bibliography of research (see in downloads) provides the basis for the methods used in our books.

Less Caregiver Stress

Medical personnel depend on family and caregivers when someone can’t report their level of pain.  Practice with this book puts parent and child, or child and elder on the same page.  Our scale words are quickly understood by patients and doctors.   Email us to learn about our Binder designed for hospital or doctor office use.  "Patients Who can Benefit..." download documents the need. It is a poster prepared for IASP World Congress on Pain (2022).

My Story

Hello! My name is Gail Goldstein.  I am a researcher by nature. I love figuring out ways to help others communicate. I have been a Speech Language Pathologist since 1972.  To me, it was obvious that a 10 level emoji scale can not work for everyone. Emojis are short-hand for specific concepts.  If the concepts aren't real clear, the scale is useless to tell one's needs.  If you haven't worked with a number line, you may not look left for the low end.  Having "Feeling Better" over the most common level of pain makes more sense.

This "My Pain Alert" project is for people who could participate in their pain care by rating their pain; if it was easy and clear; and if they could learn and practice the pain scale before they needed it.  To learn about our new picture book Bea - the Best Kind of Patient  for little ones please click to Kids Help page.

Describing pain help needs is a medical event preparation skill everyone should have. A lot of pain happens at home. It is wise to work on this skill before loved ones need it desperately. This training tool is for family based pain care. Children near one year old have been able to sign “pain” and point where.
